I am not one that believes in mixing birds of different ages. Yes I know we
all have heard of the guy that flew a yb with an old bird kit and all was
just great. There are exceptions with all things I guess, but if it was that
great all of us would be doing that. The truth is we are not, and most if
not all informed fanciers will try and keep ages the same when putting a
team together for hard competition in the case of ybs. With old birds it
matters less as the birds have already matured at their individual rate and
have gone threw a complete molt. When started they can now be conditioned at
a more steady and controlled rate than with ybs of different ages. Common
sense really don't you think ?

When we think in real terms, we look at more than just age when selecting a
team, we look at size, feathering, competiveness with-in the birds
themselves, condition, general heath and I am sure each fancier has his own
wish list to follow.
The other factors that are obvious is that depending on their age, they will
start to molt at different times and this is where it all falls apart in my
opinion.

Hope that helps you in your thinking.

All the Best!
