Tippler Subject Category:

one of my kit of 3 blues flown over 19 hours 2 years running

Guys we should never be surprised with the colours bred out of tipplers
considering their background tipplers were first imported into N.A. way back
in the 1800s in the early stages of their development and with so few added
imports to dilute the original lines it's easy to see why some of the
original colours lost here in the UK are still present there as i see it
it's not a case of breeding colours in but maintaining what is already there
Oskar i can remember the Carnew strain the Davies had one of the lads here
in Sunderland got some back in the early 80s nice looking reds and red
mottles another family of reds i saw here in Sunderland belonged to the
former SDTC secretary Harry Redman he got these birds from a fancier in
Wales in the 60s these birds bred very dark reds and blacks small tidy
looking birds colours other than mottles and prints were very rare in
Sunderland in those days some of the first birds of this type i had came
from a friend of mine Dave Sutherland must have been almost 40 years ago
they were a mealy cock his mother a blue hen with a curious red patch on her
rump and a dun check hen i never flew the mother but i flew the other 2
close to 17 hours which was a good time back then i tried a few different
strains in the late 60s early 70s one of the best came from a guy named
Dopper Hall ( he is one of the guys in the old photos you showed Barney)
Dopper had sent 20 birds over to a fancier in Australia back in the 50s his
birds were badges and saddles which came in blue /black and red great flying
birds but very difficult to control i finally settled on a family consisting
of blacks blues and checks but unfortunately all of these birds were stolen
that was over 30 years ago and what got me kick started with flying
competition tipplers i would have to agree with Barney Tom Dilks has the
purest and best documented family of Gordon Hughes birds to be found
anywhere Tom was a good friend of and a frequent visitor with Gordon when
Gordon was flying and all of Toms original birds can be traced back to birds
bred by and coming directly from Gordon as far as i know Tom is the only
person who can make this claim
